The Bloodgood Japanese Maple is slow growing and prefers shady areas with minimal sun. The leaves might develop some green if exposed to too much sun. This tree has astonishing colors that change with the seasons to create a focal point in landscapes. The Bloodgood prefers a well-drained not too clayey neutral acidic soil. During the spring the foliage is often the brightest red color, the color continues to darken as it gets closer to the fall when it turns a beautiful burgundy. The foliage has a harmonious rounded canopy shape that forms an alluring branching pattern as the branches will have multiple trunks that palmate, like its Latin name from one central point. Planting this tree in the fall will help to benefit new root growth that happens during the winter or dormant season. The roots of maples will grow throughout the fall into the early winter months if temperatures stay above freezing. You will need to put mulch, and pine needles around the roots to help them maintain moisture and shield them from the summer heat and winter cold.
