The Gibraltar Azalea is a deciduous compact growing shrub that is extremely hardy. The frilly blooms and bright trumpets have a beautiful, sweet fragrance. The shrub prefers full sun to partial shade and moist well-drained soil. It is necessary to plant in a shallow hole to leave some of the roots showing above the ground. Covering with 3-4 inches of peat moss, mulch, pine needles or perlite pellets will improve moisture retention and insulation. Pruning after the blooms will help to promote new growth and make the buds last longer. These shrubs are great for cut flowers and will attract butterflies and hummingbirds and can be used as an accent, for beds and borders, in a container, or as a large group planting.
