The Acer palmatum ‘Garnet’ prefers full sun or part shade; it should be planted in well-drained, organically moist, slightly acidic-rich soil. The foliage on these Japanese Maples is susceptible to leaf scorch from the full-hot sun – spotted shade would be best. The leaves can turn brownish and will fall off in mid to late summer if scorched. In the spring the foliage is reddish-orange and looks like a gemstone named garnet. In the fall the foliage is a dynamic beautiful red color that is breathtaking. Once established, after the first year, this maple will have an extensive root system and will require less watering. Fertilize in the early spring, prune in late winter.
